My (un-)usual summer wine!

I meant to make this entry yesterday, as I opened this bottle. It was really quite the lovely day, it was warm for the second day in a row this year, which is quite the record at this time of the season, but was really a great sign for me and probably many others. Of course, as german as this country is, the first complaints rolled in, it was too hot, nature is dying, we are going to starve and dehydrate and so on and so forth, and I am only exaggerating a bit. It was probably quite the relieve for many farmers and wine makers, although for the latter it might have been too late already. It was really cold for quite some time, in certain german wine regions the nights hit temperatures of close to -8° in two consecutive nights. The result was devastating damage for some wine makers, yet there were others that managed to save themselves.

So, here they were, warm temperatures and clear skies over the german countryside, and my home. It didn’t really get hot, not much more than 25°, but it was nice, the sun was shining and it was lovely. I really wanted to open a nice wine for warm temperatures. Usually my go-to would be Riesling Kabinett from the german Mosel, it tends to be light and acidic, if done well you can’t even feel the sugar contents. The problem was mostly, I didn’t have any because I drank them all. So what did I have left that was in any way close to that? Well I had a bottle of Sauternes, quite an expensive bottles aswell, but that would have been more effort to enjoy than I wanted; I wanted a wine that I wouldn’t have to put a lot of thought into. So I choose this:

Vietti – Moscato d’Asti

In reality the story was a lot simpler. I went down into my basement and grabbed the bottle of my choice without any second thoughts, I knew I didn’t have any Kabinett, and I didn’t care about the Sauternes, nor the other bottles that I had down there. I never bought Moscato d’Asti for myself, even though I fell in love with it when I first visited the Langhe Area and tasted plenty of it. It was only for the last Prowein and a few conversations with my friends that I returned to it and bought three bottles. Today the last of them was finished.

The wine itself is very easy going, slightly sweet and fizzy, like all Moscato d’Asti. Beautiful, fruity nose, super animating and sharp acidity, not much to add beyond that though. It’s nicely balanced, even with it having just 5.5% alcohol, it doesn’t really seem to need more. The only thing bugging me is the fruit; not the amount, but the aroma, it feels a bit parfumed and overwhelming, with a very simple singular note of; yellow. I can’t explain it in any other way, and to that I’ll say Cheers!

I procrastinate and how to better procrastinate than with a bottle of wine?
